Informing and Advocating for Our Community

BAI stays engaged in key policy conversations around AI’s impact on our community to mitigate its potential harms and advocate for its broader representation and inclusive development.

As we consider the future of our work, the pace of new AI systems, their application in society, and our desired impact, Black in AI's near-term focus is to expand efforts in broadening access to the field by driving key policy conversations around the impact of AI on our community in the global North and global South. Ultimately, we're making the case that AI harms are a result of a limited number of diverse perspectives and educational displicines contributing to the development and deployment of this technology.

Recently, we collaborated with Stanford’s Human Centered AI Lab on a policy brief address to the Congressional Black Caucus in order to provide guidance on the policy considerations that members of the CBC should be aware of when it comes to generative AI technology. In addition to the brief, members of our organization also had the opportunity to present and sit on a panel where members of the CBC could ask their questions directly. It was Black in AI's first foray into the AI policy conversation.

Next up, we have been invited to sit on the NIST AI Safety advisory committee. We look forward to more engagement with policymakers and AI policy, where we hope to contribute our organizational perspective as it relates to the impact on marginalized communities.
